- Expansion of the air traffic area will improve flight safety and environmental friendliness and boost the capacity of the Airport.
- During construction work until 16 November the runway will be closed from 00:30 to 06:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
- The full length of the runway will be open from 17 November 2016 until 31 March 2017 and no night work will be performed during this period.
- These restrictions will not affect planned flights unless they are late arriving, in which case they may be diverted to Helsinki or Rīga.
- Flight safety and the regular functioning of flights must be ensured at the airport while construction is ongoing.
- All airlines have been informed of the restrictions and flight schedules have taken them into account.
Construction is being co-financed from the EU Cohesion Fund. The deadline for completion of the work is the end of 2017.

Tallinn Airport airside area development project aims to improve environmental conditions and airport infrastructure to advance sustainable, environmental friendly, safe and efficient operations of Tallinn Airport. The investments into the enhancement of environmental status of Tallinn Airport will alleviate negative environmental impact of the airport infrastructure to the surrounding areas and mitigate the adverse impact on the environment.
Upgrading environmental side of operations comprises enhancement of the environmental performance of the airport by reconstruction of storm water systems at the Eastern side of the territory, building dedicated snow collection areas with a system to dispose melting snow water, construction of a new de-icing pad and engine run-up area, which are required for reducing air, soil, and noise pollution.
During the project, the runway and taxiway will be extended, the existing 20 year-old runway surface layer will be reconstructed and taxiway and apron area systems will be improved. Works involve replacement of the airfield ground lighting system with a more energy-efficient LED technology and upgrading of navigation systems to ICAO Category II standards. To meet EASA requirements runway STRIP area will be strengthened.
For improving safety of operations a maneuvering and stand-by area for airfield maintenance equipment will be constructed, patrol roads and perimeter fence systems will be built to meet the security requirements; maintenance equipment and machinery for runway and airport territory will be purchased.
Tallinn Airport remains open for the duration of construction period, but as an important part of the renovation work will be carried out on the existing runway, there will be operational restrictions during 2016 and 2017. Restrictions apply to night-time operations, when during the spring and autumn period in 2016 the aerodrome will be closed for air traffic on four nights a week from 00:30 to 06:00 (AM). In 2017 spring-summer period the airport will be closed for traffic up to five nights a week.
Project construction works and maintenance equipment acquisition is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund. The European Commission has issued a state aid permission to the project. Development project total eligible costs is up to a maximum of 70 MEUR, of which 50% co-financed by the Cohesion Fund.
The planned construction works will be carried out in two main phases – during 2015-2017 and 2019-2020. The first phase of construction works is carried out by Lemminkäinen Eesti AS and FIDIC supervision of the engineering service is offered by Taalri Varahaldus AS.
