Tartu Airport served its highest number of passengers ever in August, with a total of 2771 people travelling between Tartu and Helsinki during the month.
The previous record, set in May 2010, saw 2675 passengers transported by airBaltic and Estonian Air in one month. As such, Finnair has broken the record by an extra 96 passengers on its Tartu-Helsinki route. 2155 passengers passed through the airport in the same month last year, making the result for August 2016 a 29% improvement. The average number of travellers improved by 66% to 44.7 passengers per flight. A total of 31 return flights between Tartu and the Finnish capital took place during the month.
Eero Pärgmäe, the director of marketing for Tallinn Airport, which manages Tartu Airport, says that the numbers confirm the need for regular flights between Tartu and Helsinki. “Working with Tartu City Government, we have plans to meet with representatives of Finnair in the near future to determine the flight schedule best suited to everyone concerned,” he said.
A new 70-seat departure lounge was completed at Tartu Airport at the end of August. Designed to provide extra comfort for passengers, the lounge cost 135,000 euros to construct.
