Brexit will become effective as of February 1st, 2020, and a year-long transition period will begin. During the year, all the details regarding the relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom should be sorted out. Until then, however, nothing will change for the Estonian citizens. The whole year 2020 will be a transition period for Brexit, which means that all the current rules shall remain valid.
Even though nothing will change during this year, we will reply to the three main questions:
- Is it necessary to use a passport now when travelling to the United Kingdom?
Even though in 2020 the British will still accept our ID card, for additional security the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends to take also the passport along when travelling. From January 1st, 2021, a passport shall be required when travelling to the United Kingdom. - Is it possible that the United Kingdom will establish a visa?
The decision in regard to visa shall be hopefully made within year 2020. If for some reason it shall not be decided upon, from January 1st, 2021, visa-free travel shall become effective, which will give a right to stay in the United Kingdom visa-free for 90 days within six months. - Is it possible that the British will impose customs taxes on Estonia?
It is possible but in such an event customs taxes shall be imposed on all the European Union.
